Don't they make a shit load of money by reselling their 10 year old games on the DS?

SquareEnix dpesn't consider any game that doesn't sell over 2 million units to be a success.  They even considered the port of Chrono Trigger DS, which sold nearly 1 million units, to have been 'less than expected' and 'a statement that fans didn't want more Chrono titles'.

Of course, they overlook the fact that its their own fault that all of their series aside from the 'big three' (Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts/Dragon Quest) are failing due to a total lack of advertising or a lack of stock in stores.  And even then, the big three are starting to struggle in certain regions (Final Fantasy in Japan and Dragon Quest has never done well outside Japan).

S-E should know that by the third time you release a game (CT was on the SNES and PSX before the DS), the market for the same experience is limited. The first two RPGs I ever played were CT and SMPRG. Because of that, I cannot play Final Fantasy (can you say random encounters) and barely made it to the end of a superior DQ VIII. S-E still wants to make games like it did 20 years ago, even though some of the processes are very dated (and were in the SNES day as CT had enemy avoidance and visible differing character recharge rates).

OT -- It is much more likely that old-style, non-evolved RPGs are going away than it is Nintendo going away.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.
