Actually I just read the other thread about this week.... this kind of shows why the sales have followed this pattern:

So the ~170k is pretty much stores selling what they had stockpiled from weeks before and a few getting new shipments but the last big boost before christmas came on Sunday. I only have early data at the moment but 600k+ does look likely as a heads up.

So it looks like it was not retailers stockpiling, but Nintendo held off on a couple of weeks shipments then sent them all at once for the Sunday (thus well over 600k sales for next week)
