Paragraph 1: Epic isn't a developer that is really important for the success of a console. Most people can live without their games.

Epic as in very extensive and high production value games, not the company.

Super Mario games never really pushed the hardware of a Nintendo system

I bought the Snes mainly for Super Mario World and the Nintendo 64 solely for Mario 64. I know others for whom Mario or Zelda was the primary reason why they bought Nintendo systems.

For the Wii so far Wii Sports seems to be the primary driving force.
