The things that are going to hold the titles back are UGC and the look of the game. Mario Kart is easy to pick up becaue everyone knows Mario. The characters in this game seem very odd and you can make them rather off. This can be off putting to people.

If it does well, it's because it's a kart racer, just like Little Big Planet did well because it was a platformer.

So the only advantage between the games is that Mario Kart has more popular avatars? Enlightening.

I wonder what unbiased people would say if made to compare each game.  Would love a quality comparison.

No. Remember I also said UGC was a culprit. The problem with UGC is that all the content in the game is made by the player. This means that the content is not professional. So, the content of MNR doesn't match up to say Mario Kart because Mario Kart designers have developed their craft and they are paid to do it.

UGC would be the same as having a team of random people design the entire game and ship it out. This wouldn't make a very good game. All these people would make stages they think are good, but others may not agree. What your left with is a very dull game. If you browse around the tubes long enough, you'll see threads with ideas for squeals or their own game. needless to say, they are usually bad. But it doesn't matter to these people because it is what they want (which may not be that good or right for the game) and they aren't trying to sell it anyway (and the market will wake you up very fast). Not to say that there are no good user made courses. Just most of them wont be that good.

When someone buys Mario Kart Wii (or DS), they are buying premium made content that has been worked and slaved over by a team of well managed and skilled designers. With Mod Nation Racers, you are buying a lot of content, where you must scrounge though the sewage to find the possible gold.

But does the game not have levels made by the developers? If so, I was not aware of this and apologize.

Probably, but they are not going to ozze the same charm as a stage in a Mario Kart game. All the stages are going to be made using the editor, not from scratch. You can't make a course like the Airship in Mario Kart DS or Bowser's Castle, which has so many unique traps. The game rarely reuses elements, so it can not be done in an editor. MNR is going to be based around the editor, so even if the developers make good stages, they will still be flat.

I see what you're saying, but I think you might be underselling the Modnation editor.  It seems simple enough, but some of the professional tracks seemed quite elaborate.  Also I feel like some of the charm Mario games ooze are largely based on nostalgia and comfort with the environment.  Not all of course, but some.  I'll be able to elaborate more when I have more time with the game.
