Neither of them are "casual," games (which means nothing as the term is throw around too often). I tend to distinquish two typeds of games coming out (and I'll use an old Jeff Foxworthy joke to do it) First, you've got "Bottle Rocket," games. These games come on the charts strong and fall off. Like a bottle rocket, they go PSSSHHHHHHH and then pop. Oh, wow. Impressive for only a short time. They tend to fall with in 10 weeks of their release. Note that these games may not be big hitters, but the bulk of their sales are in the first few weeks, esspecially the 1st or 2nd week. Most of the games coming out now for the PS3 and 360 are great examples of bottle rockets. The other is "Diesel Engines." They may start slow, but they go for a long, long time. They tend to sit in the top 50 charts for about 50 weeks before they may disappear, and they could potentially reappear again. Nintendo's titles are all Diesel engines. Just Dance is a great example of one. Note that these titles may still start strong if they come from high profile series (like Mario Kart), but their defining characteristic is they never go away. Little Big Plantet did 51% of it's sales in the first 10 weeks and then 61% in the first 20. From then on, it sold very low, usually uinder 20k, until it got a small resurgance latter which was another 5%. This is not a legs titles as it relies on quick burst to make it's sales. Only 1/3 was time working for the title. LBP sold because it was a 2D Platformer. Not much of another reason. If MNR does wall, it's because people like kart racers. So I don't see time working for MNR that much. It wont put it to outstanding numbers. |
i like your analogy, but i do see sales of MNR picking up over time, for that exact reason - people do like kart racers, and its one of a few games where you can play 4 player split screen. but we will just have to wait and see.
i certainly hope it does well, as a game its going to rely on having a good community online to race against, so hopefully it'll do well, and sales pick up becuase of that.
