it's kind of like a rts game, where you directly control one main character (olimar, some spacesuited alien thing) and you lead around a group smaller characters (pikmin, those multicolored things with leafs/buds/flowers on their heads) and order them to do stuff. you go around killing other animals to grow more pikmin, tearing down obstacles like walls, building bridges to get across water, and look for spaceship parts/treasure to advance. it sounds very weird at first, but once you play it for a bit, you'll get it.
