I do the exact same thing for all of my fire emblem games and it's fairly easy later in the game if you level up your characters right early on but I am working on the shadow dragon on the merciless level hard mode and it is very difficult not trying to loss a single character.
especially since the bonus chapters can only be obtained if you loss a certain number of characters.
