Actually, this is only true on consoles in Japan for the most part. Though there've been a few exceptions there too (MH3, DQ Swords, Atelier Rororna, etc). And really, WKC did pretty well in Japan too, almost on par with Rogue Galaxy.
In Japan, RPGs are doing better than ever on handhelds. DQ is up. Pokemon is up. MH is way, way, way up (and now bigger than FF). And legitimately new IPs like Inazuma Eleven are doing fantastic even.
