Evidently almost all the outlets (Famitsu/Enterbrain, Media Create) overtracked it considering it they all said sellthrough was higher than what SE ended up reported shipping (oops!) and many retailers did massively reduce the price (800 yen new was the last bottom-bomba figure reported iirc). Japan was a disappointment from all angles, no question. But thankfully western sales made up for that, which was something Wada said was likely to happen beforehand.
I still think killing the JP 360 release was a mistake though. I bet a 360 version would've netted around 200k from collectors, completionists, otakus and westerners living in Japan, with little to no impact on PS3 sales (maybe 50k less at most), and would've pushed the game overall over the 2m threshold. And had FFXIII sold over 2m in Japan, I think a lot of this "flop" talk would've disappeared...
