So one would have to believe that Natal will save the day for MS, or that a significant price drop is due in 2010 to think otherwise.
If MS announced their annual projections, it would be a pretty simple affair to see where they themselves predict the gap will be in the same time frame.
As for any claims that "the generation ends as soon as someone releases a new console": ridiculous. It ends when the last man standing ceases production and support.
You don't win a race by dropping out prematurely and then claim victory because you were ahead before you quit and your opponents passed you. |
The PS2 is still selling. Still has games... and it's the next generation. There is nothing ridiculious about it.

The PS2 also won the 6th gen.

And? The Gamecube was also still selling and had games coming out in this generation for a while. Same with Dreamcast with games.

Sega tapped out when they cut production of the Dreamcast well before the next gen started. It was directly because they could not compete with the initial success of the PS2. There's no arguing that.
It's always the commercially viable platforms that stay in production long after their successors have debuted. And if MS calls it quits early again (which I don't see happening), they will end the generation in last place, even if it's because they choose to launch an all new platform instead.
The more likely scenario is that they will end up in last place regardless as 360 production continues well after the PS3 passes it in sales.
