Sometimes the unstoppable force of the hype train leaves no survivors.

Still, I was interested in both Ratchet and Uncharted and the demos for both games pretty much killed that interest. Sad, in a way.

Well that's your opinion.

The opinions of many after the release of both demos were good. The reviews of both games were good.

Assassin's Creed gets a mixed reception, and the damn thing sells a mil.

I wasn't suggesting that the demos or the games themselves were not high-quality; I can certainly recognize that they are.  The gameplay style just didn't turn out to be something that I enjoyed, which was disappointing.  As I said, I was interested in both games.  I may have to rent them for a more thorough evaluation somewhere down the line.

The MAIN point that I was trying to make, though, was that Assassin's Creed reached that sales mark largely on the back of all that hype the game was generating.  Whether the game received a mixed critical reception or not, it was far more universally present in the gaming media than either Uncharted or Ratchet, which is of course likely a condition of it being on more than one platform.  The reviews weren't exactly terrible, either, though not as good as the other two games mentioned.  The sheer force of its presence in the public eye brought it high sales, regardless of other factors.
