you wouldn't believe how fast older people who didn't start gaming until recently can forget moves, they can come back the next day and forget about 90% of them, so to be casual friendly and good to established gamers at the same time, it's a design decision they went. if you are already an established gamer, simply don't talk to them and just enjoy the game. the brilliant design behind nintendo with these games is that you have a choice, in galaxy, you never have to read the story, and in this one, you never have to talk to those annoying ass npcs if you choose not to. the world hub in galaxy was a problematic navigation tool to the worlds if you are revisiting your save after months of not playing, and the new one solves that problem as well, it's hell of a lot better to navigate than galaxy for me personally since I don't have to deal with bs and can just get to the playing part faster. if there is anything I wish the game had, it's higher res since I don't do dolphin lol, maybe the next console i guess. |
My opinion is that tutorials, especially the one's that require you to read small text, NEVER work. There are very few old gamers that have the patience to sit and read countless help bubbles. From what I've seen, they always immediately try to control the game, even if they don't know how! They skip past text sequences just like the rest of us!
The key to getting these people into games is not to overload them with tests, trails, and loads of small text. 2d Mario, after all, didn't have any tutorials when it came out. Many millions of people have played that game! It more or less taught people through the experience of playing the game and dying. The genius of Nintendo is not "optional help bubbles", it's Super Mario Bros 1st level and how people immediately picked up the game just through that.
The hub world, I'll agree, was worse in the original Galaxy than it is here. Still, Galaxy 2 doesn't really fix the issue as there is still a hub world in the form of Starship Mario. All the "goodies" that would be in a 2d mario world map have been removed and put into this Starship Mario hub world. It would be interesting if Starship Mario had more to do than just talk to a bunny about how to jump and spin. Perhaps this changes as the game progresses, but so far Starship Mario is boring.
