The eye strain and vision damage was in large thanks to the vector art(red lines) Gunpei Yokoi wanted full color screens but they'd have costed a good deal more at the time. I have to think if it had color and not just red vectors it may have done okay but we'll never know now. Edit: Also what about Yokois respect for the Gameboy? or Hell Game & Watch you know basically spawning all handheld gaming as we know it...
