Even tho Galaxy is my fav game in the last decade and Galaxy 2 may soon replace it, I would have to disagree.
Some how art has come to mean "great" in the mind of gamers. But art is an expression.
I think of it like this:
You can have two houses, 1) one is considered art. It looks interesting because it's made off recycled glass bottles. But it's not really somewhere you WANT to live. It's a spectacle, and more importantly an expression of the artists heart (in this case being green). It's very rarely a game does this. I could only think of SotC.
The other house is a well crafted house designed for being lived in. It has the latest amenities and the builders only used the best materials. It's completely functional and has many innovations to make it even more comfortable. It's well crafted. I think all great video games fall into this category, including SMG2.
I guess to be succinct: there is a difference between Art and Craftmanship. Great games reguire craftmanship more so than art.
(i realize this doesnt address the superficial artistic design that most great games posses [ie Okami, Metriod Prime], but the visuals are just one part of the body of work. A house with the Mona Lisa in it wouildnt be considered an art piece just because it has art in it)
