I think if you want to stick around as a hardware developer you need to focus on first party atleast to some degree. That way when times are tough and the 3rd party guys have their attention taken up elsewhere you can still count on having some great games.
I'm hoping that their apparent focus on first party development means they won't sell at as much of a loss next generation so they can be profitable even if they aren't winning in marketshare. This would help Sony stick around in the gaming industry for a much longer time.
