I ask again, how is a practice that gives game publishers lots of money worse than a practice that doesn't give them any?

The point about being WORST than piracy for the DEVELOPERS/PUBLISHERS, its that not only they are not receiving money for the used copy, but the store is taking one potential customer that WAS willing to pay money for the game, but now buys the used copy for only 5 bucks less, because its cheaper for him.

The illegal player was not likely to pay for the game anyway, but the gamer that goes into a store to buy a game IS willing to pay. Its WORST also because the same stores that sell the new games are PUSHING the used game into the customer, instead of the new game.

This line of logic does have merit. If we assume that the majority of pirates are not customers, getting it because its free but fundamentally unwilling to pay, while a used buyer is a customer whose need is being served while not selling another copy of the game, therefore a customer who is willing to pay getting the product with no revenue returning to the makers.
