Japan is the ONLY place this game isn't living up to expectations. In the US, it's absolutely crushing them.
I was one who thought that Galaxy could never possibly surpass Halo 3's lifetime sales, but it's becoming increasingly clear that it may. I urge you to do historical analysis of previous Mario Games to see how they sell over time.
Here's a start: in its first month of sales in the US, Super Mario Galaxy sold more copies than Super Mario Sunshine did in August (its launch month) + September + October + November + December. Super Mario Sunshine went on to sell 5.5 million copies worldwide, 3 million in the US alone.
I'm not sure it will actually best Halo 3, but "not as well as we would hope" isn't even remotely appropriate. Super Mario Galaxy is shattering Mario sales trends.
