This is true, DS screens are quite a bit smaller than that. If if was enlarged from the original, I would imagine that it would be at least a little fuzzy, but it's not.

If it scrolled over the picture, then it would have to zig-zag, because it is both wider and taller than a DS screen. It could just scroll down and still capture the whole image.

The idea would be to pan over the picture from a possibly randomly chosen "point A" to a possibly randomly chosen "point B", thus making the image slightly different each time it's viewed. I've seen it done quite a few times in games; it's a fun concept.

 

I'm going to side with the idea that they're designing the games with the 3DS in mind as well, though.

(but, lol, whoever says black and white have the worst starters need to check Ruby and Saphire!) They don't even fit well with the others!
