Sorry about using this analogy, I'm obviously not trying to imply anything about the quality of any people -- I just can't think of a better example at the moment.
I haven't given it much thought, but perhaps, since white has long been a large majority in America, and even now they are still much larger than individual minorities, there's a tendency to say that someone who is part-white and part-(some minority) in ancestry is (that minority) unless the white part is substantially larger. (Or perhaps it's more so for me since I live in Minnesota which is like 90% white, and only that low due to large recent immigration.) On the other hand, a person of mixed race can usually choose to be identified as white instead, except to the bigots.
But now I'm curious -- what's YOUR answer to the question?
