Well businesses that are poorly run don't make money.
But as for games as a medium for art and entertainment, when a person is creative you often feel pretty compelled to do projects even if the money isn't there.
I work in film and sure my day job gives me money, but that doesn't stop me from making short films for artistic reasons.
