Also: what yields Monster Bone L? Spiral Lance is the only alternative to Rampart and Acrus, my options for building better Lances at this point have run dry.

I think you get Monster Bone L mostly from Lagiacrus and later great monsters. I guess whichever weapon type you choose you always run into this same problem, you'll have to fight with the same weak weapons for quite a long time because the better stuff requires you to get really far into the game.

Hammers can't cut off tails of great monsters. While that isn't an issue when it comes to Qurupeco, Royal Ludroth becomes an easier fight when you cut his tail off because some of his attacks become less effective, like his barrel roll and tail swipe. In fact, about half of the great monsters have a tail you can cut off, so hammers aren't the best choice for the offline mode (you get one item from the tail too).
