Just because one franchise sold well and happens to have an aspect does not mean that aspect sells a game. Correlation is not causality. Plus unless I am wrong, don't the MGS games have skippable cut scenes? At least the first one did.
It's just as likely people were turned off from the sequels by the first game.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
