Well the PS3 is imo the best console this gen but its actually a PS2 with more Horsepower and Online gaming. All the innovations in the PS3 didnt influenced the market in a way the Wii did. Why PS2 ? Because the PS2 is still the best selling console and it actually begun to aim at non players. Which was later done by Nintendo even better. The PS2 created the market as seen today. Casuals Hardcore Nongamer those types were seen first time with the PS2 and not before. Again it just begun with it while this gen the whole thing expanded a lot. |
I disagree. The PS2 was, IMO, indeed simply the PS1 writ even larger. More of everything, including market domination and adult image. But it didn't bring anything truly new to the table IMO. Eyetoy is a joke from the perspective of impact on the industry.
Oddly enough, I also disagree that the PS3 is just a PS2 with more of everything and online gaming. PSN games, Home, etc. have no precedent on the PS2. The more advanced media storage and playback makes the PS3 a true move into the concept of home entertainment center, which I don't believe the PS2 was. Heck, the late lamented Linux capability alone is a remarkable innovation, though that may fail the "importance to industry" test.
The PS2 had a huge impact to be sure, but more because of the way it devastated the competition than due to any real innovation from its predecessor.
"Casuals Hardcore Nongamer those types were seen first time with the PS2 and not before." Disagree here too; I'd go along with saying this is where people really started to identify separate camps, but the PS2 generation (let alone the console itself) certainly didn't create these distinctions.
