The PS2 died because people moved on to other things, and PS2 BC in the PS3 would have done nothing to change that. It would just have lessened HW sales and possibly boosted SW sales a little. It wouldn't really have changed anything.

People moved on because developers moved away from the PS2. If the PS3 still had PS2 BC, software sales would be better and that would encourage developers to continue creating PS2 games.

So you'd rather that developers kept making PS2 games instead of current generation games? All the current generation consoles are better consoles in both functionality and power, and there is no reason why developers should stick to old hardware when there is new and better hardware available. The move to the current generation machines would have happened no matter what.
