Monster Hunter got big on the PSP, a console not very popular in the west. Why should have people known about it before?
MH3 is the most hyped, advertised, best reviewed game in the franchise (outside of Japan). Acting like new fans of the series are "Nintendo loyals" would be about as ridiculous as thinking all FF7 fans were "Sony loyals."
