Why do people want Sony to fail so badly?

Because Sony was too damned arrogant this time. The price for starters, then all the idiotic comments made by Sony people,(people will work harder to buy it, 5 million will buy without games, etc etc) bundling of BluRay. They thought the word "Playstation" was just irresistible, no matter the price tag. Well, tough. I, for one, believe that they could have launched at 400$ without BluRay. Then it could have been a completely different story. As much as I dislike Microsoft, they did get one thing right: HD-DVD is optional. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Sony, (have a PS2), but I do think they need a nice slap in the face from reality at the moment.

they have the right to be... they are actually delivering some of their promises and it pisses ninis like weezy off. Really free online play and web browsing. Hmm.. check. Blu-Ray makes a difference in game.. check. Full game store with downloadable content. Check. A game that matches its CG trailer.. check. Only problem is its $600 which once they cut the price things will be different. More people are whiling to pay $500 then $600.

Online play worse than in the 360... check. Half-assed backwards compatibility in the PAL PS3 (and probably in other versions too, soon)... check. Most people not caring about the Blu-Ray drive for movies... check. Fact that we've yet to see how much of a benefit Blu-Ray will be for games... check.

If you think Sony has the right to be that arrogant, see how many of their promises and claims are actually turning out to be right. They once said they'd give $1200 to everyone who saw a PS3 on the shelves (at a time when there were dozens). They said that they'd sell 5 million PS3 even without games. We have games right now, and 5 million PS3? Maybe on the shelves, certainly not at people's houses...
