I agree with you. Miyamoto has said many times that he doesn't play video games, he just designs them. He get's his ideas from doing things around the house. For example he came up with Pikman because he likes to tend his garden.
So I think that the Halo reference was innocent. (And the Insominiac comment was innocent). And as I experienced one E3- the translators many times over or under emphasize things. It's just like when we take a Japanese web page and have Google translate it- sometimes the meaning gets jumbled.
Also, I am kind of tired of how people are getting judged in sound bites. In order to know someone you have to look at everything they say. You can twist anybody's words if you omit history and context.
