I love announcements like these because it really shows the hypocrisy of some people.

Yesterday, if you asked a PS3 fan of Halo and Bungie it was they make the same game over and over again and that game sucks.

Today, if you ask that same person about Bungie and Halo, they'll say Halo is a decent game but OMG BUNGIE ROCKS!  MS IS DOOMED!

All in all though, complete surprise announcement. I assume Activision originally wanted to save this for E3 but since they have had so much bad PR lately they decided they needed something big to divert attention away from the Infinity Ward fiasco. Still, good for Bungie and hopefully good for gamers.

Maybe it was impactful on their quarter and they had to announce the deal.  Either way their next call is on May 6th we're likely to find out more about it if it did have an impact.

That could be it, but what I said just seems much more likely.

This very much smells of Activision saying hey, hey!  Look over here!! while they quietly sweep the IW under rug hoping people just forget about it.

Bungie stated in an interview that they did not want to step on MS's or Halo:Reach's toes at E3 and now was a good time before the beta started in earnest.

Halo:Reach is definitely at the forefront of Bungie's attention right now. Not a game that is in pre-production.  They even said they wanted the announcement to come and go.  That is from Bungie's perspective though, no telling what Activision is thinking.
