I've generally had the opposite experience with the lance: it's great for bosses, since your front essentially becomes a fortress, but it's too slow and its thrust has too limited an area to be effective against crowds. How do you handle hordes?

You can swing it sideways, too, that catches pretty much everything about 150 degrees in front of you or so.
