These are both AAA games, and both will sell like, um ,….hotcakes. However, the PS3 is missing the advantage here.
Sony has far fewer consoles in play, and at least some of those consoles are being used as BR players. N has almost 2X as many consoles, though we do know some ARE in nursing homes ;).
Now MK:DD did well even on the lowly selling Cube (not sure if the Cube was #3 or #2 at the point when DD was released). N is now the leading selling console, with the margin growing in their favor.
Every GT has had the advantage of being on the #1 console of each generation. Now they are on the only console still being outsold by its last gen predecessor. I believe GT will do VERY well, and sell lots of systems, it looks amazing. BUT, as of now, Wii has about a 2:1 advantage of consoles in the marketplace, and there is no sign of Wii sales slowing down even after the holidays.
However, I do believe GT might have much stronger initial sales than MK, for several reasons.
* PS3 owners NEED good games. There is just too much, “When the good games come out….” chatter to think that this might not happen. GT is one the Holy Grail PS3 games, it will have a big attachment rate quickly.
*Wii games tend to sell over time (partly due to the amount of families and casuals that own the system). Most of the Wii titles in their top sellers list sold with legs, not out of the box. Plus Wii has recently had a lot of well received titles recently, and with Smash & Fit probably hitting the market before Kart, there will not be a NEED for a great game as much as there is with the PS3.
But at the end of the day, I think the numbers point to winner: Wii (with a possible landslide, depending on how well PS3 sells before it's release).
