He was seriously emo. Heroes in RPGs defy the odds all the time, but I doubt such a little bitch as Squall would have had the fighting spirit needed to survive a mortal wound.
Plus, the Draw system is so tedious as to suck the very will to live out of pretty much anybody.
The more I think about it, the more plausible it seems.
