THE BEST FINAL FANTASY!

This game is legendary and for me its the pinnacle of both the franchise & the RPG genre that hasn't been surpassed yet.

Despite all the epic CGI Cut Scenes in post FF7 FF games NO SCENE except for one can surpass the pure charm/simplicity yet epicness of the opera scene. And only 2 scenes in all of gaming cross The Opera Scene for me.

Not to say the opera scene is the only highlight of this game, magic is present throughout most of it, peaks include the opening credits, yes the first time we hear Terra's Theme....arguably the best "character/overworld map" them in a FF to date, the phantom train scene which is touching, Celes' suicide attempt scene is so well done with the music & the circumstances under which it happens (I didn't actually see this scene in my playthrough but when I found out it can occur I checked it on youtube....THANK YOU FAB_GS!), the EPIC 20 Minute long ending!

Next the characters, definetely one of the best cast in FF to date, 2nd if I had to rank the cast in terms of the FF series. Celes, Locke, Sabin, Shadow are my favorites! Terra is good too. This game starts of with Terra but in my mind most of the characters were like "main characters", it didn't seem like "Terra" WAS the main character, I like this in a game.

The music....greatest soundtrack in videogaming! I will not leave without putting a few of my fav tunes here. This was the peak of Uematsu's Musical Genius imho.

The music in the Opera Scene is also some of the best!

The Story is the best in the series history, its gripping, involving, touching, rich, full of backstories that are GOOD not "filler crap" you see in many RPG's.

KEFKA the best villain in the series is here!!!!! And like everyone knows he actually manages to do something FF Villains fail at...he actually destroys the world!

The only slight problem is that like most other FF games towards the end the story starts to slightly break down...but it happens the least in this one compared to other FF's.

Gameplay -- the best part of it was that it was QUICK but as I played it years after its release I found the gameplay fun/good nothing exceptional.

Final thoughts:

Its clear the game was the foundation for many things that grew on into the PS FF's.....and I am glad that people do see this as the best one in general and lots of media sites when they review their FF rankings to place this one in first place.

It does just about everything right. I am rambling on but it is my 2nd or 3rd favorite game ever so I am allowed too (Keeps alternating between GTA:SA & FF6 lol)
