Yes, I live in the same house as one. I have never seen anyone use a classic controller without dangling it from a Wiimote. Is it possible?

No, but I don't see the big problem. Leave the Wii remote on a close chair or on your lap, it's no problem.

I hear pockets work quite well.
Anyway, by doing it this way, there are a lot of advantages - classic controllers do not need to have batteries or bluetooth, and it also opens up the possibility of 15 player games for the Wii, more than double what the PS3 is capable of (both support 7 via bluetooth, then Wii supports 4 GC and 4 classic controllers) Alas, most people haven't got screens big enough to split into 4 rows of 4 and thus this incredible feature got little support :P
