I don't see how it is not. Specially with all the recent games that have it implemented. It is a much less used gaming mechanic in japanese made games, no matter how many Monter Hunters or Resident Evil 5's you throw around.
The west may not have created it, but it certainly is spreading it through common implementation. Shooters-o-rama come to mind. *vomits*

Umm...have you ever played Tales or Star Ocean? Those allow for co op but if you don't want another person playing you set the party member on AI and you can switch between party members on the fly (in single player) and/or assign them tactics like stay still or attack using X or be conservative whatever. I don't see how if the party system is similar to that it's a bad thing...

I have played Star Ocean 2 and Til The End of Time and you're right, it wouldn't interfere with anything. I just got a different concept from those images. A video or an explanation directly from the devs will shed doubts soon.
