No system is served well by an engine that seeks to be all things to all platforms. It's only when you drill down to the metal, exploiting all of the quirks, bugs and hidden strengths of a particular machine that you can really see what it does--this would be why games at the end of a machine's life invariably look a lot better than those from its first year on the market, i.e. duh.
