A game similar to NES Zelda? They had them on the NES, it was called Golden Axe Warrior.
OMG! WHAT'S THAT?! HE IS IN 3D DOT GAME HEROES!!!
I am sure you can find plenty more.
Plus, just look at the loading screens in 3DDGH, it makes it very apparent that this game is a tribute to the 8/16 Bit gaming days.
