I think (to a certain extent) it is what they believe that they want ...
Many members of the media and industry in general (whether they will openly admit it or not) see the potential in Wii style motion controls but their inner graphics-whore prevents them from believing that the kinds of games they desire are possible on the Wii; even though these games were possible on less powerful hardware (like the PS2). In a large part the huge development costs associated with graphically intensive game development have prevented the development of PC only games that push the latest and greatest hardware to its limit (which would show how out of date the HD consoles are); and this has resulted in many of these people believing that if Nintendo produced a system to handle graphics on-par with the HD consoles they would be satisfied.
Realistically, I don’t see this actually making these people happy because when they see what inexpensive hardware can do in a couple of years their inner graphics-whore will prevent them from believing the games that they enjoy are possible on the HD consoles. On top of this, I believe that Nintendo’s success with the Wii was (in a large part) because they offered a new game-play experience and they will be forced to improve upon the Wii and extend its functionality in new ways to keep people interested.
