As has been mentioned hundreds of times, in previous generations good exclusive third party games were not released in any large quantity to Nintendo platforms so Nintendo (basically) had a monopoly on good games on their platform. Had Square, Enix, Capcom, Konami and/or other major publishers focused more of their high-quality development on the N64 or Gamecube they would have sold (far) more software.
