Yes there was splitscreen in MH Tri footage. Tri has a local 2 person splitscreen mode called arena or something like that.

So just some quick battles against some hordes of monsters and not a real co-op mode?

From what I understand they are real co-op and not "quick", but are indeed not the main part of the game. But this is the local splitscreen I am talking about, the online co-op is the "real" 4 player co-op.
