Ahh, some more people in this thread are speaking sense :)
I'm going to conclusively prove that this generation is the most successful (in terms of unit sales, last gen might win for profits), firstly, looking at best sellers only
Top 50 best selling games by platform
Wii 9
DS 8
360 3
We're only halfway through the generation (give or take) and already the 7th generation has 40% of the top selling games. Leaving 60% for the other 6 generations
Now total software sales (added in my head, if I'm off by a couple million get over it)
6th gen 1.82 billion excluding xbox and dreamcast, generous estimated total 2.2 billion
7th gen 1.625 billion
I'm not even going to do total sales for the earlier gens - they are miniscule
At the current rate of game selling (10 million a week) it will take a little over a year until the 7th gen outsells any other generation for total software.
