3DS is the successor to the DS. Like how the DS was the successor to the GBA, Wii successor to the GameCube etc...

And if the screen is larger, then it would explain the DSi XL being released now.  So now we have a faux April Fools joke as an April Fools joke.  April Fools day has just gone too meta on me.
