I'm going to say that was one of their problems. Instead of developing on a console that cost less money, they were holding out any profits from it in anticipation of a console that would cost as much as the other systems.
What kind of business considers the pricier option to be preferable unless they really are out of touch with the mainstream?
Even movies would cost less if the more expensive films weren't the blockbusters.
