Well, I'm no linguist, but I believe that if you get back as far as Old English you're talking about before the Norman infusion of French into the English language.  It might as well be a different language from looking at it, different written alphabet and everything.  Middle English (Chaucer) is barely understandable itself, but it's much closer to Modern English than it is to Old English -- I think. 

But I don't think it's really fair to say that Old English is "another language" from ours while Middle English is not -- one evolved into another evolved into another.  On the other hand, if we were gonna draw a line somewhere, we should probably draw it there due to the massive influx of French vocab. 

I think I need to equivocate some more.  Or maybe not.
