On the one hand, you can claim Metroid deserves more sales. But on the same token, you could claim Zelda on the whole does as well. Or Kirby. Or WarioWare. or Fire Emblem. Or practically any of Nintendo's major properties aside from Mario and Pokemon.
Fact is, Metroid is actually one of the top selling gaming series in the world. And that comes with a pretty limiting assortment of titles. And with most of those sales only coming from the west. I'd say its doing pretty good for itself. Especially having done so well practically in a non-existent genre with limited advertising and with one new title every 3-5 years on average.
