Except when I buy a used game that is one copy thats being transferred to me. A copy that has already been legally purchased at some point and thus shipped to a store and made developers money.
When you dl a pirated copy the uploader is essentially distributing new copies of the games that have never been purchased. And even if the initial uploader has bought the original he does not have the right to distribute potentially thousands of versions of that game.
Besides with a used game the games store is still getting compensated and do you know what? The industry isn't just the developers and the publishers its also the retailers and thus money is still entering the video games industry. Just a different part of it.
I'm not arguing that piracy does or does not hurt games sales, that is irrelivant.
