The used market actually helps new sales. A lot of people buy games knowing they can sell them back a week after release and get back about half their money.

If it wasn't for the used market... these people wouldn't buy new.

It also takes away a lot of risk from people buying a new game, knowing you can get some money back and it has value.

Used sales help the market.

Piracy appears to be a nuetral factor. So used sales are better then piracy.

So if someone downlods a game and likes it and then decides to buy it, that doesnt help the market?

It does help the market, however generally in research that trend tends to be about even with the people who would of bought it, but don't because it's free. They basically seem to cancel each other out.

yeah the research seem to point that way.

Then i wonder how the rate between people selling used games to buy new ones and people only buying used looks like that could possibly cancel out each other too.

I would think it wouldn't if only because it doesn't in other fields like books and CDs.

u might be right, it was a thought that came to me and made me wonder.

In my case and my surrounding friends cases I can sleep well about this issue as we all buy the stuff that we deem good enough so to me its the ultimate consumer tool and there isn´t much anyone here can do to change my mind about it.

We (people) have been copying, borrowing from each other for 30 years now and the industry has been screaming doom all this time and nothing happened yet so it´s just stupid propaganda from the industry.

The fact is if you make a good enough game it will also show in sales if it doesnt it isnt piracys fault its something you missed in your creation that didnt appeal to the consumer.

I belive the joy of ownership doesnt dissapear just because you can download something and people not downloading does not hold the rights to be happy about owning an original, so do people that can download.

It all really does depend on the person, though there can be problems. Since people can often lie to themselves to jsutify stuff. (Not saying you are.) Interstingly I play on a cracked TF2 server sometimes, even though i own TF2. My friend likes to go on it because people who have it legit still get all their unlocks and such... and to be honest... cracked people tend to suck beause they're less expierenced. I've seen a number of people go from having no steam icon to having one, and seen a couple dozen people buy the game who pirated it. I've also seen a couple people who seem to log on everytime I'm there yet they won't spend the 10 bucks even though at this rate it probably would be less then a penny per hour of enjoyment. Those are the people who annoy me.
