It basically goes back to the "roots" and is similar in style to FF 1 - 5 & possibly 6 (but 6 was more steampunk-ish)
Thats why when it launched believe it or not most FF7/8 fans (at the time were huge in number) didn't think much of FF9, but lots of the older fans thought it was the best one eva!!
In fact sakaguchi (creator of Final Fantasy) said its his favorite.
