Because they think its a great product and with the DS name and the push for 3d in the cinema, television and now gaming its the perfect storm to release a 3d handheld?
The public is currently obsessed with 3d because of Avatar and theres not going to be a better time (ever probably) to capitalise on the 3d obsession because soon enough people will get over it since its already being milked by the film production houses who're realeasing poorly done 2d to 3d conversions.
