Nintendo - 3DS, why so soon? - View Post

Also, just sort of thinking of this now, but the relatively quick launch of the 3DS puts Sony in a tough spot. Not just from the 3D angle, but also when you consider the fate of the PSP. The pressure is now on Sony to rush out their next handheld as well, or risk slipping further behind Nintendo in the handheld department.

On the other hand, if Sony DID rush out their next handheld in response to 3DS, they would in a way be conceding defeat of the PSP to the DS by cutting its life short. Although the PSP is dying quickly in the US anyway, it is still selling strong in Japan and decently in Europe, which are probably Sony's two strongest markets. So Nintendo is sort of putting Sony between a rock and a hard place with this move.
