I'm more inclined to go for Julius Caesar. He is essentially responsible for Western civilisation. His conquest of Gaul and essentially setting up the Roman Empire (though it only became official after he died) led to the spread of Latin culture. Also his empire lasted longer than Sargons =P

Julius Caesar was a crazy dictator who desired to conquer everything he saw. Not such a great man.
And the Byzantine empire lasted longer than the Roman empire.

The Roman Empire became the Byzantine Empire. Even after Rome fell they were still known as Romans for years before finally adopting the title of Byzantinium.
